Handling the Heat this Weekend

Hey CVC, It's forecast to be nasty hot this weekend, so here are a few things you can do to avoid overheating: 1. Ride early and get done before the heat gets too high (don't be climbing Encinal at 1:00 when it's 75 at the beach and 105 at the top); 2. Make sure you carry two water bottles and consider freezing the water in them overnight (about 1/2 - 3/4 full will allow it to expand when freezing, then top off with water in the morning); 3. Top off your bottles at every water stop; 4. Drink double shots (when you drink focus on taking twice what you normally might drink); 5. Ice packs. This is one of my requirements if I'm riding in over 100 degrees. Find a small tupperware container, fill it with water and freeze it. In the morning, put it in a cooler before the ride, then transfer it to a gallon baggie and slip it into your middle jersey pocket. It will help keep your core temperature down and you will have ice water later to drink or pour over your head; 6. Don't overdo it. You have about 85% of the power and ability when it's really hot out. Don't be a hero and try to PR the Rockstore this weekend ;) 7. Add electrolytes and salt tablets to your regiment if you plan on riding for more than 2 hours. Personally, I'll be finishing my short ride up by 9am everyday, if I even ride. But it's June so be sure to use sunscreen, drink twice as much and be sure to fill up at all water stops. On Saturday we have 4 ride to choose from, including a Santa Barbara away ride option. The Red Ride will be starting at the Landing and heading for the Rock Store, then down Latigo, up the beach and back up the mountain on Mulholland. The Orange ride will head south along Mulholland to climb Piuma, come back down Stunt, then 7-Minute and home through Calabasas. And we'll have a Purple ride doing an Out-N-Back on Carlisle Canyon. The Gold ride will start in Summerland and ride up into Santa Barbara along the coast. On Sunday we've got three ride options for you. The Red Ride will head out through Hidden Valley to Dos Vientos, then do a nice extension along Sycamore Canyon. The G.O. Ride will be doing the "easy Simi loop" with the addition of the Woolsey climb and Black Canyon descent. And the social ride is doing a nice cruise to Calabasas and Long Canyon before returning down Mureau and over Agoura Road. For the Independence Holiday we have two versions of our popular 4-Lakes Club Ride, with or without the big climbs. We will roll around Westlake, Eleanor, Sherwood and Malibu Lakes. Add Treasure Hill, Rock Store and Lil Sycamore if you've got firecrackers for legs :) We've also got midweek rides Tuesday evening and Thursday morning, as well as the Thursday night Pub Ride. And next week we will continue our Wednesday evening family ride out of Simi Valley. Always be more aware of potential hazards and anticipate dangers when riding with your groups. You are the eyes of everyone behind you and the voice to point out obstacles, vehicles and other dangers - even when you are tucked into the peloton. Join us at the Gypsy Bike Ranch on Wednesday nights for a nice family cruise ride along the Arroyo Riverbank in Simi Valley. Route is a 15 mile "all bikes welcome" cruise followed by refreshments and a casual potluck. Plenty of parking at Knolls Park (1300 W Katherine Rd, Simi Valley CA 93063) and we'll have the fire pit, bbq and potluck spread to enjoy. Rollout will be at 6 from the park, or come by my place around 530 to get bikes setup and new rider introductions (1280 Black Canyon, Simi). Also, if you've got an old bike gathering dust in the garage that would make a great beginner or loaner bike, bring it by. We've got room for another 10 ponies or so in the barn : ) Contact me for more info or getting a loaner bike for a friend or family member. Come for the rides or just to hang out for a few hours. SAFETY REMINDERS If there is a marked bike lane, cyclists may ride shoulder to shoulder. Single file otherwise. There is no three or four abreast at any time while moving.If you are wearing a CVC kit, you represent the club, so please be sure to follow the rules of the road. When riding with CVC, you agree to: * Wear a helmet and ensure my bike is in good working order. * Ride to the right, pass on the left. * Ride in the bike lane (where available) and signal when moving into another lane. * Ride no more than two abreast in the bike lane, single file on narrow roads, and avoid "Swarming" (bunching up and multiplying the chance of accidents) * Call out and point if I see a traffic hazard * Respect ALL traffic laws and the rights of all autos, bicycles, and pedestrians * Ride predictably and remind other to be safe * Be a bicycling ambassador PARKING Please remember when parking at The Landing for any weekend morning rides to park and congregate towards the far end of the lot away from the street and use the middle row. Do not park next to the homes. ADDITIONAL NOTES The Purple ride is considered a no drop. Having said that, please note that if you are falling behind or slower than the average pace, you may be dropped. All rides not asterisked are considered a "drop ride" so please understand the route before you start (and how to get back). If you get to a regrouping spot and no one is there, consider yourself dropped. As always, we will try to stick together and have a fun, safe ride. We will regroup regularly to allow everyone a chance to ride together. If for any reason you leave a group ride, please pass along the information to the ride leader. Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions; however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride.
