Question of the week: What is the SMMT challenge? Santa Monica
Mountain challenge (where’s the “T”?) is a yearly challenge that has
grown to 15: road bike, gravel bike, mountain bike, and running
segments to be completed from May 25, through Aug 31. This gives you
plenty of time for the challenge, although there are some
over-achievers who do it in 72 hours (congrats greybird). It lets us
compare times against last year to judge our current conditioning,
encourages us to climb some hills we don’t like to do, and a little
healthy competition against your age group and skill level.
Safety Tip of the Week: Ride One or Two Across-Ride single file or
double file as appropriate to the roadway and traffic conditions and
where allowed by law. Even where riding double is legal, courtesy
dictates that you single up when cars are trying to pass you if the
lane is wide enough for them to safely do so.
When riding with us:
· wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order
· stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file
otherwise
· not overlap wheels
· descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight
bends, and slick spots
· pass slower riders on the left
· ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards
· avoid bunching up
· respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles,
cyclists, and pedestrians
· always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders
your intentions
· we are a "rules of the road" cycling club
· Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is
either actively raining
or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club
ride.
Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions;
however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride

Red/orange ride through Moorpark is cancelled today, as it is likely to get
caught up in rain.
Social ride is on, they should be home in time, however please proceed with
caution.

Hey CVC Members,
As added fun and excitement, plans are in the works for a CVC Summer Fun
Mammoth Trip on Aug. 15-18.
There is not an "official" ride, but rather rides with recommended routes
that we can ride together, one being a June Lake route.
The afternoon fun and/or morning fun will continue with organized hikes (by
the Super Host, Kent with special guest appearances by Luigi).
Everyone is invited, lodging will be on your own. There are campsites,
many Arbnb's with great condos, and nice hotels available now. We have
already confirmed our reservation through Arbnb at 3377 Chateau Road #7,
Mammoth if that helps.
Most places are within 10 minutes of each other. Our hope is to get an
eventual count, have dinners somewhere, enjoy the beauty of Mammoth
together and have a great summer trip.
Jump on in, the more, the merrier.

Question of the week: Should I ride the “away ride”? Absolutely!
Sometimes it may feel like an inconvenience, but it’s well worth it.
You get a chance to ride on roads you don’t travel every day.
Different landscapes, and different cracks in the road. It feels
fresh and new. You do need to allow more time, but that forces you to
sit back and enjoy the ride. And for all you foodies, there is
usually a lunch stop,
Safety Tip of the Week: Stay on the right side
<http://www.marc.org/bikeped/sharetheroad.htm> of the lane-Ride in a
single-file line with other cyclists (not two or three abreast) if the
street is too narrow for cars to pass. Cyclists are allowed to ride
in the middle of the lane to increase visibility. Keep an eye out for
parked cars (or rather, doors from parked cars opening into the
street). Avoid the dreaded door-into-cyclist snafu by staying a little
bit closer to the center of the street if there are parked cars. Also,
move towards the left side of the lane when turning left. Stay out of
drivers’ blind spots
<http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/pubs/cycling-guide/section3.3.shtml>,
especially at traffic lights or stop signs.
