Question of the week: Why did I get dropped last week? Well, to start with
I think I surprised a few people. This was a stone cold drop. As I
watched the group pull away on PCH, it did not take me long to realize I
was not going to see them until the next regroup. The rainy and cold
weather has kept me inside and off the bike. Saturday was the 7th ride
totaling 255 miles so far this year. Last year that was one week of
riding. I've been doing gym work and some time on the treadmill, but it
just isn’t the same. I/we need to keep up the time in the saddle to
maintain cycling fitness. Time to shake out the cobwebs and as my friend
says, “let’s ride”.
Safety Tip of the Week: Ride One or Two Across-Ride single file or double
file as appropriate to the roadway and traffic conditions and where allowed
by law. Even where riding double is legal, courtesy dictates that you
single up when cars are trying to pass you if the lane is wide enough for
them to safely do so.
When riding with us:
· wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order
· stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file
otherwise
· not overlap wheels
· descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight
bends, and slick spots
· pass slower riders on the left
· ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards
· avoid bunching up
· respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles,
cyclists, and pedestrians
· always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders
your intentions
· we are a "rules of the road" cycling club
· Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is
either actively raining
or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club
ride.
Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions;
however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride

Question of the week: How do you count sheep? This is a slightly revised
version from when I used to race dirt bikes (motorcycles). I start off
down my driveway, and get the Garmin notification to start recording. Left
onto my street, another left and stop for the pedestrian gate. Slowly roll
through the gate and left again. Now I start shifting gears heading
downhill. Slow down for a right turn and look behind to see if any semi
trucks are heading my way. Start picking up the speed and race down the
s-turn to the stop light. Left turn, right turn, past McDonalds and all
those breakfast smells. Up Spring Hill, left on Tierra Rejada, right on
through the Underwood farms. Cut through Read Rd, left up the Lump.
Descending Erbes............lights out.
Safety Tip of the Week: Stay on the right side
<http://www.marc.org/bikeped/sharetheroad.htm> of the lane-Ride in a
single-file line with other cyclists (not two or three abreast) if the
street is too narrow for cars to pass. Cyclists are allowed to ride in
the middle of the lane to increase visibility. Keep an eye out for parked
cars (or rather, doors from parked cars opening into the street). Avoid the
dreaded door-into-cyclist snafu by staying a little bit closer to the
center of the street if there are parked cars. Also, move towards the left
side of the lane when turning left. Stay out of drivers’ blind spots
<http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/pubs/cycling-guide/section3.3.shtml>,
especially
at traffic lights or stop signs.

Question of the week: Is it really too cold in Ca?
In light of my cold weather complaining, I had to share what I witnessed in
N.Y. this week. Several cyclists riding in the snow. Some fat tire, some
regular road bikes, all bad a**. Even though it may be just another day at
work for him, it was impressive. If they can handle 32 degrees and ice, I
guess I can handle 50 degree weather. See you out there.
Safety Tip of the Week: See and Be Seen-Whether daytime, dawn, dusk, foul
weather, or at night, you need to be seen by others. Wearing white has not
been shown to make you more visible. Rather, always wear neon, fluorescent,
or other bright colors when riding day or night. Also wear something that
reflects light, such as reflective tape or markings, or flashing lights.
Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see
you. Make eye contact with other road users, especially at junctions, then
you know they’ve seen you.

Question of the week: When will the cold weather go away? As I’ve told
Mark many times, “I don’t like cold weather”. I’m 3rd generation
California native. There’s a reason I live in CA (besides the fact that I
was born here), I love the sunshine. I’d rather ride in the heat grinding
up Latigo, than being cold and getting those shivering chills you can’t
quite shake. I know you’ll think I’m a wimp in that regard, and it’s
true. I also know it will get plenty hot soon enough; but I'm ready for
spring, how about you?
*Safety Tip of the Week:* *Watch for Traffic Coming from The Rear*-Even
when you are occupying the proper lane position, it often helps to know
when a car is coming. Consider wearing/using a mirror. Since those in
front cannot see traffic approaching from the rear, it is the
responsibility of the riders in back to inform the others by saying “car
back.” Around curves, on narrow roads, or when riding double, it is also
helpful to warn of traffic approaching from the front with “car up.”
When riding with us:
· wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order
· stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file
otherwise
· not overlap wheels

I know I said I wanted to get back to the regular Wednesday afternoon
schedule, but I said that when it was 70 degrees. If there's anybody out
there that wants to go spin the inside legs outside tomorrow even though
it's going to be cold, I'd go. Gettin' antsy for sure! But I do need to
know before I show up! Please respond to this email by tomorrow at noon if
you'd like to go out and do the Wednesday afternoon ride at 3:30.
Sheri
Sent from my phone that doesn't know what I'm saying. Sorry for all the
mistakes.

Question of the week: When is the last time you tried something
different? Whether it’s challenging yourself with a tough climb, changing
your route home, or even going on a ride with someone who is not a
cyclist. Don’t get stuck in a rut. We are blessed with many local riding
options on the road and in the dirt. Change fosters growth.
*Safety Tip of the Week:* *Be Predictable*-Group riding requires even more
attention to predictability than riding alone. Other riders expect you to
ride straight, at a constant speed, unless you indicate differently. Along
with hand signals, verbally warn cyclists of your changes in direction or
speed. The lead rider should call out “left turn,” “right turn,” “slowing,”
stopping,” etc. Announce a turn well in advance of the intersection, so
that members of the group have time to position themselves properly. Riding
in a predictable fashion
<http://www.bikeleague.org/resources/better/roadrules.php> also makes it
easier for cars to go around (and not into) you.
When riding with us:
