Fwd: CVC-ride leader meeting-new leaders needed
by Taylor Hodoose 21 Sep '19

21 Sep '19

Please join us Saturday Sept 28 at 1:00 pm for a ride leaders meeting. We will be having a one hour meeting with existing ride leaders and those that are ready to lead a ride. There will be an open forum to discuss and answer questions. Location: 1024 Pan Ct. Newbury Park For all ride leaders, but mostly new; these are the simple "Ride Leader responsibilities". You will see that it does not take much, and you definitely are experienced enough to help out and lead. 1. Either choose a ride, or suggest route. Most routes already exist on CVC site. 2. Know your chosen route, and where re groups are 3. Announce route at beginning of ride 4. You do not have to “pull” everyone all day, but you do need to let riders know of course changes coming up 5. Make sure the same number of riders that started are at the regroup, and no one is having mechanical or physical issues. 6. Announce to the group when to begin riding again Please let me know if you have any questions. -- Taylor Hodoose 805-390-2200

CVC is a fun, volunteer-based club. We offer different rides weekly, so we do not get bored. We support our club riders by guiding them along our routes, stopping for water, and getting the group going again. We watch out for each other to ensure everyone makes it home, or in the case of Tex last weekend, get the help they need. Ride leaders keep a cohesive group, so that we can ride as a group. Otherwise we are just riding solo. It does not take much, but is crucial to our club. If you have ridden one of our group rides more than 5 times, you can be a ride leader. Stay tuned for an invite to the next “ride leaders” meeting coming up. We need all of you to step up and help. Safety Tip of the Week:  Be aware of vehicles-Many collisions occur when a cyclist is on the inside of a vehicle which is turning right. Don’t assume the vehicle is going straight ahead just because it isn’t signaling right. Always avoid ‘undertaking’ any vehicle in this situation – it’s better to hang back until the vehicle has moved past. Never cycle along the inside of large vehicles, such as trucks and buses, especially at intersections, where most accidents happen. When turning right, a truck will often pull out to the left first, creating a wide gap between the vehicle and the curb. Many cyclists think it’s safe to ride into this space, but this is a dangerous place to be as the gap quickly disappears when the truck swings around to the right. When riding with us: · wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order · stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file otherwise · not overlap wheels · descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight bends, and slick spots · pass slower riders on the left · ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards · avoid bunching up · respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians · always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders your intentions · we are a "rules of the road" cycling club · Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions; however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride -- Taylor Hodoose -- Taylor Hodoose 805-390-2200

Club Clothing!
by Sheri Leiken 15 Sep '19

15 Sep '19

As you have read, we are in the process of creating our next CVC kit for 2020! This not only attracts new members to our club, but it also helps us retain the LOOK of a CLUB as we have had for so many years. Members, Be proud of representing this great organization and let's show off our club pride! Lots of ideas and opinions have been thrown out from many of you, and now is your chance to be involved by coming over tomorrow to evaluate the different vendors. Look at cuts, fit, and styles. (Not designs, that is next). What runs too big, what runs too small, which vendor meets the needs of the majority of our club members? Which has the best chamois, which is too short, too expensive, etc. I know I said I was looking for a variety of sized peeps, (and I am!) but, if you want to be involved, please know I want your opinion no matter what size. Your thoughts are important! Please let me know if you can drop by tomorrow evening. (any time between 6 and 7) Let your 2 cents count beforehand!!!!! We need to get everyone back wearing CVC clothing and to show we are proud to be a part of such a great club! Thanks, Sheri

New Kits
by Sheri Leiken 12 Sep '19

12 Sep '19

Hey All, We are in the process of new kits for some time in the next year. This is a long process and it begins with selecting the right manufacturer. It may be the one we have, and then I have samples from other vendors that the board has narrowed down to. We are NOT at any design phase. I have received interest from many of you wanting to help, but of course most all of you that volunteered are "standard" size and all the same size. What I would like is a team of people representing many different sizes. This is your future kit and you want it to fit you and you want it to feel right and be the best fabric. I have samples that I need to send back, and so I am asking if you are able to come by Monday night and give your 2 cents. Obviously we already have women's small and men's large represented. I have a men's medium represented as well. I would like to fill in representation with those in different sizes from women's(medium, large, xl to men, xl, xxl, 3xl....) AND I want tall people and short, (yes, I know) We want to get everyone covered. Also, those that are seriously into making sure the chamois is right, and care deeply about fabric should let me know. I have a couple of bathrooms and space to try on the different vendors, and *Do NOT* need models, but a fit representation... of what is best for everyone. I am most interested in different sizes giving their input... I would love you to contact me about Monday night. Sheri

Well, with my crash two weeks ago I will not be as “competitive” as I wanted to. I’m going to give my best effort, but have resigned myself to accept that I won’t be at peak form. That does change my approach in a very positive way. Now I'm just going to enjoy the event without the pressure and expectations of placing in my age group. I also get to set a low bar for a ½ Ironman distance that I can improve on the next time. And besides the real reason for doing this is to raise funds for the charity, and I’ve already accomplished that. Safety Tip of the Week:  Announce Hazards-When riding in a tight group, most of the cyclists do not have a good view of the road surface ahead, so it is important to announce holes, gravel, grates, and other hazards. Indicate road hazards by pointing down to the left or right, and by shouting “hole,” “bump,” “pine cone”, etc. Everyone in a group should be made aware of hazards. Final Pub Ride of the Year
by Cliff Scott 10 Sep '19

10 Sep '19

Happy Tuesday, CVCers: The sun is beginning to set too early for the safety of future Pub Rides, so this will be the last Pub Ride of the year. Sad, but true. And I have a conflict for Thursday evening (Carrie Underwood is calling), so your ride will be led - once again - by our esteemed President, Sheri Leiken (thanks, Sheri). I’m saddened to miss this final Pub Ride of the year. The ride will begin at Stonehaus at 5:30 pm. Stonehaus is located at 32039 Agoura Rd, Westlake Village, CA 91361 - on the northeast corner of Agoura Road and Lakeview Canyon Road. Please email Sheri at sheri.membership(a)gmail.com<mailto:sheri.membership@gmail.com> and let her know if you are coming. You should plan on arriving at 5:20 pm at the entrance to Stonehaus. The ride will take off promptly at 5:30, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early, as parking can be challenging on Thursday evenings. THE RIDE WILL NOT WAIT FOR LATE ARRIVALS, so please note the route if you’re not going to arrive on time. Here is the route we’ll be taking: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31078561 This ride is at a social pace, which I understand may have different meanings to some, but if you’re looking for a ride where you can really hammer, this is not it. Also, riding this time of the evening can be challenging (motorists coming home from work, distracted by either their reflections of the day or their anticipations of the evening to come), so it is important for our safety to stay together as a group. Even if you cannot make the ride, plan on being at Stonehaus around 7:00-ish for the fun part. RSVPs are not required, but if you wouldn’t mind letting Sheri know that you’re coming, it would help her do a better job of coordinating the ride. Sheri is looking forward to seeing you on Thursday. Sorry again for not being able to make it this week.
