This Week's Pub Ride
by Cliff Scott 22 Aug '19

22 Aug '19

Happy Monday, CVCers: We have a very special Pub Ride scheduled for this Thursday, featuring the generous contributions of Eric Wan + John & Teri Caffrey and their respective RV Campers! Here’s what you need to know: * This is a BYOB event…please bring whatever you’d like to drink (wine, beer or any other beverage) * The Caffreys and Eric will be providing a few things to eat, but if you wouldn’t mid augmenting their generosity, please do so. Both campers have refrigerators, ovens and ranges, and the Caffreys will be setting up a small BBQ for Sausages, Brats, etc. * PLEASE BRING A LAWN CHAIR OR TWO,. so we have seating for everyone!!! * If you’re not going to bring any food, please consider making a small contribution (maybe $5-$10/per person) to the tip jar to help offset Eric's & the Caffrey’s generosity :) This week's Pub Ride will begin right in front of Win’s Wheels in Westlake Village at 5:30 pm. Win’s Wheels is located at 30941 Agoura Rd # 302, Westlake Village, CA 91361 - in the industrial complex on the north side of Agoura Road between Lindero and Reyes Adobe (kind of in the same area as Wade’s Wines). Win will be there and has offered to keep his place open for us so we have access to restrooms, etc. Let’s meet at 5:20 pm at the FRONT entrance to Win's. We’ll take off promptly at 5:30, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early. WE WILL NOT WAIT FOR LATE ARRIVALS, so please note the route if you’re not going to arrive on time. Here is the route we’ll be taking: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30892385 This 21.5 mile ride is at a social pace, which I understand may have different meanings to some, but if you’re looking for a ride where you can really hammer, this is not it. Also, riding this time of the evening can be challenging (motorists coming home from work, distracted by either their reflections of the day or their anticipations of the evening to come), so it is important for our safety to stay together as a group. Even if you cannot make the ride, plan on being there around 7:00-ish for the fun part. RSVPs are not required, but if you wouldn’t mind letting me know that you’re coming, it would help me do a better job of coordinating all the details. Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday. The fundraising efforts have been productive. I have received some minor CVC love, but still need to get that full “bear hug” from the club. It’s not too late, and any amount will add up to help those kids. I had a swim/bike/run brick two weeks ago, and a nice swim last Sunday. Along with regular training, I will be doing a long swim/bike/run brick this Sunday. Anyone who wants to join me for a portion at Zuma beach, drop me an email. Safety Tip of the Week:  See and Be Seen-Whether daytime, dawn, dusk, foul weather, or at night, you need to be seen by others. Wearing white has not been shown to make you more visible. Rather, always wear neon, fluorescent, or other bright colors when riding day or night. Also wear something that reflects light, such as reflective tape or markings, or flashing lights. Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you. Make eye contact with other road users, especially at junctions, then you know they’ve seen you. When riding with us: · wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order · stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file otherwise · not overlap wheels · descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight bends, and slick spots · pass slower riders on the left · ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards · avoid bunching up · respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians · always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders your intentions · we are a "rules of the road" cycling club · Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions; however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride -- Taylor Hodoose 805-390-2200

Cool Breeze Century - This Saturday
by Cliff Scott 14 Aug '19

14 Aug '19

Hi All. Just a quick note to permit CVCers to ride together this Saturday at the Cool Breeze, if desired. My suggestion is, for those who are interested, we meet at 7:00 am in the registration office and plan on departing NO LATER than 7:15 from the starting line. At this point, I am aware of the following potential participants: * Myself * Scott Whitney * Rochelle Plue * Sue Harden * Richard Aguilar Please drop me a quick email just to let me know you are planning to ride with the CVC group. Also, this is not an official CVC ride, but just a group of CVCers who want to enjoy the Cool Breeze together. Many thanks, Cliff - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [cid:C8533F5A-5E97-4556-A60F-DDAD386CF63A@home] Cliff Scott The Scott Group 2406 Topsail Circle Westlake Village, CA 91361 (818) 735-7370 office (818) 257-2236 mobile cliffscott(a)scottgroupconsulting.com<mailto:cliffscott@scottgroupconsulting.com>

[image: image.png] Question of the week: How can I thank my Ride Director for the fantastic job he has done his first year? By clicking the link https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/discovery3/taylorhodoose and supporting the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. I am participating in Nautica Triathalon's 1/2 Ironman distance that supports Cancer research at the hospital. They share their research with all other hospitals, so this results in a massive outreach. I challenge all CVC riders to donate at least 2 cups of coffee $10 to this great cause. You can donate anonymously, but please reference CVC. Let’s show what a great club this is and the kind of support we can provide. I only solicit others for donations once a year, how can anyone really deny our children and future children? Local rides- Saturday August 10th @8:00 Ride Leader Route Miles Climb (ft.) Other riders expect you to ride straight, at a constant speed, unless you indicate differently. Along with hand signals, verbally warn cyclists of your changes in direction or speed. The lead rider should call out “left turn,” “right turn,” “slowing,” stopping,” etc. Announce a turn well in advance of the intersection, so that members of the group have time to position themselves properly. Please be ready for anything while riding
by Taylor Hodoose 05 Aug '19

05 Aug '19

CVC'rs, while riding PCH Sunday, I had the misfortune of coming up to a fatal accident involving a motorcycle that struck an SUV head on. It was very disturbing, and made me reflect of how venerable we are as cyclists every time we are on the road. One thing we all enjoy is the feeling of riding outdoors. I found myself looking out at the beautiful ocean while riding, and at times not focusing on the road and cars near me. I know this takes away from the experience, but we must always be watching our surroundings. Be prepared to evade the person opening their door, pulling out into traffic, texting, or stopping in the bike lane. We must remember and practice this at all times, even when strolling around for a "lake lap". Do not get too comfortable, nor be complacent. Safe riding to all. -- Taylor Hodoose 805-390-2200

Happy Monday, CVCers: This Thursday's Pub Ride will begin at Cronies Sports Grill in Thousand Oaks at 5:30 pm. Cronies is located at 1620 Newbury Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320 - in the same shopping center as Newbury Bike Shop, just west of In-n-Out Burger. Let’s meet at 5:30 pm in the parking lot at the entrance to Cronies. We’ll take off promptly at 5:30, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early. In this year's SMMT challenge, I have had a PR for every climb except RockStore due to stopping to jump over two k-rails, and Mulholland (I’m planning a re-do). I’ve never been at peak performance on every attempt for the duration of the 3-month challenge. I haven’t changed my training regimen, but I have shifted and lost 5 pounds. Is that the drastic difference? It’s certainly not sustainable, but is fun in the meantime.
