Ride of Silence 2019

Save the Date and come on out to participate in the Ride of Silence. The Ride of Silence is an annual international bicycle ride to commemorate cyclists killed and support those injured while riding on public roads. It helps to raise awareness among motorists, the public and decision makers of the dangers cyclists face on the roads, especially from other traffic. Make our Conejo Valley Strong! The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured. After this unusually long winter, I feel like I have finally got my riding legs back. It took me a while longer than I expected, but now I’m not getting dropped like a hot rock. For me it was all a matter of putting in the miles. Some will say there are good and bad miles. Maybe for the elite, but I need the time in the seat to remind my legs of the work they need to do, and opening up the lungs. It’s not always easy to stay motivated, but worth the commitment to keep in cycling shape. Safety Tip of the Week:  Watch Out at Intersections-When approaching intersections requiring vehicles to yield or stop the lead rider will say “slowing” or “stopping” to alert those behind to the change in speed. Do not call out “clear”. Each cyclist is responsible for verifying that the way is clear before entering the intersection. Signal well and make eye contact with drivers before making a turn or slowing down. When riding with us: · wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order · stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file otherwise · not overlap wheels · descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight bends, and slick spots · pass slower riders on the left · ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards · avoid bunching up · respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians · always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders your intentions · we are a "rules of the road" cycling club · Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. CVC Members, Just want to send a reminder that today is the last day to register for the Picnic and Benefit Ride in order to receive the performance shirt included in the price of the ride. It is a way cool long sleeve shirt! Today is the last day to register to receive this! You will still be able to register for the Picnic and Benefit Ride after today, but without the shirt. Fully stocked rest stops, great routes, and great fun! We have some great items from our sponsors, bike baskets, gift cards, fittings, amazing! Come share in the fun, the great riding, the great friends, and help our community along the way! The food truck is ready to go, so come on out and sign up!!! Some of my cycling pals have told me they have back pains while riding. My answer to that is core strength and flexibility, both of which can be found in yoga. Personally, I have a P90x dvd that I do each Thursday night. Tony is tolerable for me, and I will do the first 45 minutes which are stretching moves. The remaining 45 minutes are balance postures, and helpful, but I often don’t have enough time to spare before getting ready for the next work day. It did feel a little silly at first, but I have found that when I am not able to Yoga, the whole body feels tighter and creaky. Safety Tip of the Week: Watch for and Avoid Road Hazards-Be on the lookout for hazards such as potholes, broken glass, gravel, puddles, leaves, and dogs. All these hazards can cause a crash. Always ride with at least one hand on the handlebars. Save the “look, Ma, no hands!” tricks for the driveway at home. Carry books and other items in a bicycle carrier or backpack.  In wet weather watch your speed as surfaces may be slippery and it will take you longer to stop.
