Safety Quiz!
by Sheri L 09 Dec '25

09 Dec '25

*Safety Quiz* This week, for our safety message, I present a 1 question, multiple-choice quiz: Question 1. Assume that you are a hypothetical cyclist who rides 4X per week. What single intervention will reduce your accident risk by 25%? a. Wear bright clothing b. Use a front and back flashing light c. Use a mirror and/or radar d. Always stay alert e. Obey all traffic laws f. All of the above g. None of the above This is a trick question. While all choices a-e above are advisable practices, the correct answer is to cut back rides to 3X per week and incorporate cross-training into your regimen. Doing this will reduce your risk exposure by 25% and will likely improve the efficiency and safety of your cycling. I have attached links to several articles below that discuss the fitness benefits of cross training and suggest types of cross training that are beneficial. Benefits of Cross-training: 1. Reduce cycling overuse injuries and muscle imbalances 2. Improve aerobic efficiency 3. Reduce mental fatigue and motivational issues by “mixing it up”. 4. Improve VO2 max and other parameters of fitness by using different muscle groups 5. Reduced cycling risk due to less time on the road The attached articles have suggestions for cross training including: Running, swimming, Pilates, Yoga, strength training. One article in particular suggested to do occasional indoor trainer rides in lieu of road rides, as a form of cross training. Doing so is especially worthwhile when the weather is not good. Plus, an indoor trainer ride is more flexible and enables more specific training goals like intervals, climbing, sprints, or just wind-down rides in a safer and more controlled environment (see final link below for benefits of occasional trainer rides) compared to a road ride. So, while the correct answer to the quiz might seem a bit facetious, cross-training will improve cycling fitness with a huge associated safety benefit. https://cyclingcoachai.com/cross-training-for-cyclists/ https://join.cc/cycling-tips/cross-training-for-cyclists https://www.bikeradar.com/advice/fitness-and-training/cross-training https://www.bikeradar.com/advice/fitness-and-training /detraining-how-quickly-do-you-lose-fitness https://join.cc/cycling-tips/no-more-motivation-gaps-how-to-actually-enjoy-… -- Stephen Levinson

Pedal with Purpose for Petros Vasiliou (10:00 am START)
by Sheri L 05 Dec '25

05 Dec '25

Petros Vasiliou could use our help. Petros Vasiliou has been selected as our recipient for the Michael P. Nosco foundation. Here’s his story and I’m hopeful through this amazing community we can help change his life! Petros is an avid cyclist and on December 2, 2024 (1-year ago!), while out for his lunchtime ride along PCH, was hit from behind by a vehicle, nearly taking his life. He had full-body traumatic injuries, was in a coma for a month and has a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). He currently requires care 24/7. Petros and his family could use Love, Hope and Community (which is all of us) Please join us on Thursday January 1st, yes New Year’s Day for a road bike ride in his honor. The ride will start/finish at Triunfo Park, 980 Aranmoor Ave, Westlake Village CA 91362, *The ride will roll at 10am, *and we will ride as a group over to where Petros is currently living and receiving his care. Meadowbrook at Agoura Hills assisted living. Meadowbrook will be supplying refreshments and is fully supporting our ride. Showing up as a group can have a profound effect on his and his family’s life. After this stop, ride at your own pace up and over the world famous “Rock Store” climb, taking in some of the most scenic views, ride across Mulholland before dropping back down in to Westlake. This ride is free (donations are greatly appreciated and can be made at www.mikenosco.com) We will have a limited supply and sizes of t-shirts for those making donation on New Year's Day (the day of the event only, we will not be taking orders and you must be on-site to receive a shirt). https://www.strava.com/routes/3427747724768133126 -- Sheri

Rock Store opening-Safety Message
by Sheri L 02 Dec '25

02 Dec '25

*Safety Reminder: Approaching Old Place on Mulholland / Troutdale* During this week’s rides, our group had regrouped at Old Place. As the smaller group arrived, they rounded the corner—where the stop sign isn’t visible until you’re already turning—and unexpectedly encountered a couple walking their dogs across Mulholland. The pedestrians were startled, and riders had to brake quickly before continuing the left turn. With Rockstore now included in many of our routes, it’s important we reinforce safe riding behavior at this intersection.*ROCK STORE OPENING TO CARS THIS WEEK!* *Please make sure to:* - *Slow to 5 mph or less* as you approach Old Place. - *Actively look for cars and pedestrians* before making the turn. - *Stop completely if you see anyone*—don’t just slow down. There *is* a stop sign here even if you can’t see it until you turn. - *Remember: pedestrians always have the right of way.* - *Remember, use one side of the road, as this will now be open to cars* We’ve already seen more than one close call at this spot. Let’s do our part to keep everyone—riders and pedestrians—safe.
