SAFETY Advice for YOU

This week, my safety message derives from my former career (before cycling) as a doctor. I have noticed that most of our members are 50+ and most of us are on one or more medications. When I wrote prescriptions for my patients, I made it a habit to discuss the potential adverse reactions and side effects of the medications I prescribed. Invariably, if I forgot to do this, the patient would experience a bad reaction for which they were unprepared and surprised. This scenario is especially relevant for cyclists because medication side effects can impact safety on the road, often in sudden and unexpected ways. One example that comes to mind is blood thinners, often prescribed to prevent blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. While blood thinners can be lifesaving, anyone on any blood thinner, including aspirin, is at risk for bleeding in the event of a crash. This is a particular problem for those with head trauma or blunt abdominal trauma. Another example is that some anti-hypertensive drugs might cause light-headedness that could put a cyclist at risk of losing their balance and going down. I don’t mean to be the arbiter of whether anyone should ride or not ride depending on the pharmaceuticals that they take. Rather, I suggest that each person on any med, including OTC meds should familiarize themselves with potential adverse side effects vis a vis cycling. Most importantly, I suggest that every person taking any medication or non-prescription supplement should discuss with their physician the potential risk that each medication might impose as well as how to mitigate such risk. I also recommend that every cyclist keep a list of their medications on them and accessible, in the event of an accident. There is not much written out there on this subject. This week's Safety Message: Many of you have heard that it is safer to ride double (two abreast) than single, but do you know why? The biggest reason is that it makes the group more visible from a distance, and it reduces the length of the group, making it easier (and faster) for cars to pass us on a two-lane road. Laws vary from state to state, but in California there is no restriction on how many cyclists can ride abreast. Here are examples of when not to ride double: * If a lane is very narrow or where the right side of the road is hazardous. (ex: Old Topanga Road as well as most of the narrow canyon roads) * If the road has continuous pavement hazards requiring cyclists to move laterally to avoid them. (ex: potholes, debris, sand or loose gravel near the shoulder or bike lane) * On a wide bike lane or highway shoulder (ex: many places along PCH). If you are on the left edge of a bike lane and shoulder to shoulder with another cyclist, the options for either cyclist avoiding a hazard are limited. * Never ride double (or even single) in a door-zone. Stay at least 4 feet away from parked cars. (ex: Triunfo Canyon after turning off Lindero) * On bike paths. To pass pedestrians and other users you should not ride double on a dedicated bike path. Safety Msg--How to send a location pin

I had the unfortunate experience a few years ago of needing a rescue for a fellow rider on a mountain bike ride. I called 9-1-1 and the reception was sketchy. The operator kept asking my location, indicating to me that she could not access my location from my cell phone information. Since I was in the middle of nowhere, and there were no street markers, I had difficulty explaining where I was on Dirt Mulholland. I had a similar issue when a fellow rider and I each double flatted on Stunt Road. I called for help from my wife, but had a hard time describing my location. To complicate matters, there are some places where cell service is marginal to non-existent (e.g. Yerba Buena). So, given these obstacles, how can cyclists convey location information in the event that we need an emergency rescue or a ride back? *Satellite:* Most cell phone companies are incorporating satellite emergency messaging into their phones. Apple, Samsung, and Google to name the most commonly owned phones now offer emergency satellite messaging. In addition, most of the big carriers (T-mobile, Verizon, AT&T) offer satellite messaging for some of their premium plans. Each phone and platform is different, so I encourage everyone to explore whether your particular mobile phone and/or cellular carrier offers satellite messaging, and whether this is part of your plan. If you have access, I suggest that you learn to use this functionality. Finally, there are dedicated satellite emergency devices that are available by subscription for those who spend a lot of time off the grid. The most commonly used one is Garmin InReach. *How to send a pin*; I queried Perplexity AI on how to send a location pin using Google or Apple Maps. I verified that the information presented was correct using my iPhone with each map provider. I provide the link below and suggest that each rider learn to access location coordinates to verbally convey them to a 9-1-1 operator or to message them (using standard or satellite messaging) to a 3rd party. Another option is to have a dedicated location app on your phone. I have a free app called ‘GPS Coordinates’ which lists the location coordinates and has an embedded ’share’ capability.
