Cool Breeze Century - This Saturday

Hi All. Just a quick note to permit CVCers to ride together this Saturday at the Cool Breeze, if desired. My suggestion is, for those who are interested, we meet at 7:00 am in the registration office and plan on departing NO LATER than 7:15 from the starting line. I am participating in Nautica Triathalon's 1/2 Ironman distance that supports Cancer research at the hospital. They share their research with all other hospitals, so this results in a massive outreach. I challenge all CVC riders to donate at least 2 cups of coffee $10 to this great cause. Other riders expect you to ride straight, at a constant speed, unless you indicate differently. Along with hand signals, verbally warn cyclists of your changes in direction or speed. The lead rider should call out “left turn,” “right turn,” “slowing,” stopping,” etc. Announce a turn well in advance of the intersection, so that members of the group have time to position themselves properly. Riding in a predictable fashion <http://www.bikeleague.org/resources/better/roadrules.php> also makes it easier for cars to go around (and not into) you. When riding with us: · wear helmets and ensure your bike is in good working order · stay in bike lanes and no more than two abreast on them; single file otherwise · not overlap wheels · descend carefully! Look out for debris, animals, potholes, tight bends, and slick spots · pass slower riders on the left · ride predictably: signal when changing lines and call out hazards · avoid bunching up · respect all traffic rules and the rights of motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians · always use proper hand signals to indicate to drivers and other riders your intentions · we are a "rules of the road" cycling club · Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. This Week's Pub Ride

Happy Monday, CVCers: This Thursday's Pub Ride will begin at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company in Westlake Village at 5:30 pm. Figueroa Mountain is located at 30770 Russell Ranch Rd, Westlake Village, CA 91362 - in the “Shoppes at Westlake Village" shopping center which contains Target, Hook Burger and Total Woman (on the street that circles behind Costco in Westlake Village). Let’s meet at 5:20 pm at the entrance to Fig Mountain. We’ll take off promptly at 5:30, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early. WE WILL NOT WAIT FOR LATE ARRIVALS, so please note the route if you’re not going to arrive on time. Please be ready for anything while riding

CVC'rs, while riding PCH Sunday, I had the misfortune of coming up to a fatal accident involving a motorcycle that struck an SUV head on. It was very disturbing, and made me reflect of how venerable we are as cyclists every time we are on the road. One thing we all enjoy is the feeling of riding outdoors. I found myself looking out at the beautiful ocean while riding, and at times not focusing on the road and cars near me. I know this takes away from the experience, but we must always be watching our surroundings. Be prepared to evade the person opening their door, pulling out into traffic, texting, or stopping in the bike lane. We must remember and practice this at all times, even when strolling around for a "lake lap". Do not get too comfortable, nor be complacent. Safe riding to all. -- Taylor Hodoose 805-390-2200

Cronies is located at 1620 Newbury Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320 - in the same shopping center as Newbury Bike Shop, just west of In-n-Out Burger. Let’s meet at 5:30 pm in the parking lot at the entrance to Cronies. We’ll take off promptly at 5:30, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early. I’m unsure if we can arrange for a single table, but if possible, I’ll try to arrange for one on the patio in front. In this year's SMMT challenge, I have had a PR for every climb except RockStore due to stopping to jump over two k-rails, and Mulholland (I’m planning a re-do). I’ve never been at peak performance on every attempt for the duration of the 3-month challenge. I haven’t changed my training regimen, but I have shifted and lost 5 pounds. Is that the drastic difference? It’s certainly not sustainable, but is fun in the meantime.
