Hi all,
In regards to the Purple Away Ride: Correction, there is currently no ride leader for this level, as Bill Sietsema noted in his announcement. Near as I can tell, none of the regular members of that level will be participating. So, anyone wanting to ride the Purple route will be doing it on their own.
Sorry for any confusion, I will need to talk to the writer and tell him to get his act together if he wants to keep his job!

For those riding the Ventura Away Ride, here is some information about the return along Coast Highway from Carpenteria. Ron Parker from Channel Islands Bike Club sent this along.
"Hi All:
Welcome to the West County!
I don’t know if you realize it or not but there is a detour on the 101 between Bates Road and Seacliff.
In December Caltrans erected k-rail on the hillside side of the road.
All bike traffic now travels behind this k-rail in both directions!
Further the southbound on-ramp @ Bates Rd has been closed for reconstruction.
This detour doesn’t give you the great views along the ocean but is much safer.
It is a bit narrow in spots so single file is in order.
So if you are coming to thecoast from Lake Casitas you will have to make a left turn into the off-ramp
at Bates Road and stay left of k-rail.
If you look at this page you will see more description and photos."

SAFE CYCLING TIP OF THE WEEK: In a group riding two by two, and you are riding the outside line with nobody to the right, do the folks behind you a solid and slide over towards the gutter. If someone wants to pass you, they then don't have to endanger themselves by riding outside of the bike lane. It's always a good habit to get into "riding the gutter" even when going solo. There will always be someone jamming along behind you at some point, and they'll appreciate not having to check over their shoulder for traffic and yell, "On your left!".
