CVC Club Ride Recap for Week of 4-5-2013 through 4-11-2013 Hi CVC'rs, Here’s this upcoming week’s club ride recap summarizing the rides and identifying the club ride leaders. Please refer to the individual ride captain’s ride announcement emails for specific ride details. Very Important: As members and/or visitors of CVC we are all expected to abide by the following club safety policy while partaking in sanction rides. Sanction Rides Safety Requirements: * Helmets must be worn * Obey all traffic laws * Where provided, ride in the bike lane * Ride to the right, Pass on the left * Point-out hazards & approaching situations to riders behind you * Ride 2 abreast only where it is safe to do so; Single file where it is not. * Never ride more than 2 abreast * Avoid passing other riders on down-hills. * Indicate your intentions verbally For safe cycling, CVC recommends the following: * Ear buds and headphones are not permitted * Ride predictably; Avoid rapid changes in movement * Be vigilant for doors opening on parked cars * Use a mirror Local Rides: Saturday, 4-6-13: 8:30 AM rides are as followes: Red: Westlake Blvd/Decker Climb- Mulholland Hwy - Lower Encinal Canyon descent to PCH-Latigo Canyon-Mulholland Hwy-Decker Canyon descent back to Westlake Route: Orange: Westlake/Decker to Encinal Descent, PCH and up Latigo. This ride meets at 3:45 at the Landing Parking lot at end of Lindero (same place as shops). we will be at end closest to the street. We try to ride as far as we can, but it's usually about 25 miles due to daylight. Inclement Weather Policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route is wet it is our club’s policy to cancel scheduled club ride. Should club members choose to meet and ride in inclement conditions the ride will not be considered an official club ride. Upcoming Events: Conejo Valley Cyclists Classic Bicycle Ride, April 21th, 2013 Join us on Sunday April 21th, 2013 for a ride with your classic lightweight road/race bicycle. Many have, collect, and enjoy the “old” bikes and there are not too many opportunities for group rides dedicated to them so we at CVC have created our own quarterly Classic Bicycle Ride. We plan on a relaxed pace ride through Hidden Valley, past the estates of the rich and famous, and back of 20 miles. After the ride we invite you to bring a stand and display your classic and socialize with other bicycle enthusiasts at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and the Natural Café. If you do not have a classic but you’d like to ride with us you are welcome to participate. CVC Sunday Social Ride – Sunday 9:00 AM Meeting at Citibank Parking Lot - Westlake Village -- Westlake Blvd. & Agoura Road (North East Corner), this is a longer social route with options to make it shorter. Route: Westlake to Arboles left on Parkview then a Left on Erbes follow by a Right on La Granada, we will ride up Lynn to Dos Vientos and returning on Portrero. This route is recent addition to the rotation so have a route slip if you are unfamiliar with these directions. Hi Everyone, I'm a little under the weather and need to be off of the bike until Next Sunday. Please designate a ride leader. My suggestion for this Sunday is the Social Ride to Does Vientos and returning on Potrero. Please reference the route slip and map for details as this is new to the Social Ride. Dos Ventos Community Center for Restroom and Water As usual, we will meet at the Citibank parking lot and have our pre-ride announcements promptly at 9:00 AM then splitting into our groups and departing. It is mandatory to have and ware a helmet and it is the rider's responsibility to ensure that the helmet is valid (check expiration on helmet inner tag, usually good for five years) and in good working condition. It is not a "no drop ride" but as always let's try to stick together and have a fun, safe ride. Things to have: Water to complete the ride or at least to reach the next water stop. Tools to perform minor repairs. Chain repair linkage. Inner-tube and inflated device. Cellular phone. Food to replenish energy. Inclement weather policy: In the interest of safety, whenever it is either actively raining or the ride route has wet roads, it is our club policy to cancel a club ride. Club members may still choose to meet and ride in these conditions; however, the ride will not be considered an official club ride. After the ride, please join us at one of the many refueling options available at the finish such as Natural Cafe, Sea Casa, East Coast Bagel, Sprouts Market, etc.. Hi CVC'ers Just a REMINDER of NEXT WEEK'S April's Away Ride: Sat., 4-13th -that we've previously announced via' the annual club ride calendar Saturday, 4-13th 9:00am start Glendora Mt. Rd. - Mt. Baldy Village -(Optional: Switchbacks to Ski Lifts) Then down to Claremont-La Verne-San Dimas-Glendora Start: 9:00am Glendora High School: Foothill Blvd. & Valley Center Dr., Glendora CA - parking lot on East side of Valley Center Dr. (south of school buildings) Car Driving Instructions: ( 50 miles from Westlake ) Travel to #210 Frwy: East to Glendora Exit: Lone Hill Ave (turn left at bottom of off -ramp: going N) First major intersection is route # 66 = turn left 1 block on Rte # 66 bear to right on a diagonal street called: Compromise Line Rd. about 1/4 mi. = R on Valley Center Ave. look for Glendora H.S. Parking lot on Right side ( East side of road) Bike Ride description: See ride stats. from my Garmin computer - the last time we rode this ride http://connect.garmin.com/activity/189658903 48.16 miles 6,280 total ft. of climbing ( incl.optional loop: 4 miles, 1809' of switchbacks up & back after Baldy Village ) Moderate climbing & beautiful views most of the way in multiple directions: Urban, canyons, reservoirs & mountains. Suitable to Orange & Red Club riders: both in distance & overall climbing feet: Many places to turn around and ride back downhill if you so desire After twenty miles - we'll descend to Baldy Village (water, food, beer, bathrooms) Ride Specifics: Total ride 48 mile loop - bring extra water- drink mix - NO water stops along way- for 1st 20 miles Climbing concentrated in first one-third of ride - similar to our Yerba Buena Rd. The total ride is easier than riding all of Yerba Buena however. If you like our Mulholland Hwy ride from PCH - you'll like this ride even better. First 4 miles (4-12% grades max.) averages 8-9% Then ride across Ridge (4-5%) overlooking Azusa Canyon: Morris Reservoir & San Gabriel Reservoir Last turn - Newman Point overlook : 6.2 miles - before heading due East Top of first climbing part: 8.5 miles Descend to Intersection of Glendora Ridge Rd. at :8.9 mi. Ride for 11.1 miles ( mostly gradual swooping uphills & downhills) Cow Canyon Saddle : at 20.0 miles Steep descent (.8 mi.) to Mt. Baldy Village (at 4,000' elevation) Stop for water-food, beer at Mt. Baldy Restaurant Challenge: while others are "lunching" at the Lodge - we can climb the extra credit steep switchbacks 4 miles, 1809' of switchbacks up & back from Baldy Village (a segment from the 2011 AMTOC ) Then we can ride back either of two routes - we'll see who wants to ride which ..... 1) Downhill to Claremont, La Verne, across a couple small rollers & bike path to San Dimas & Glendora - see the route & map above OR..... 2) Re-ride the route in the opposite direction ( retrace ride) - steep but relatively short climb ( .8 mi. out of Baldy Village then mostly downhill on Glendora Ridge Rd. Hi CVC Members, Please see what you can do about volunteering for our club's ride Cruisin The Conejo... Cruisin' is back for our 29th year with all NEW fabulous routes from the children's 10 mile Junior Tour to the full 100 mile century. Set in the gorgeous Southern California countryside of the Conejo Valley and its surrounds. This area is now the spring training ground of choice for several world class pro cycling teams. We could not put on this great event without the crucial work of BSA Troop 753, Cub Scout Pack 3753, and our volunteers. Thank you to all.
