Did you know that most helmet manufacturers, and cycling safety organizations, suggest replacing your bike helmet every 3 to 5 years if it hasn't been in a crash? Most cyclists shopping for a helmet make their decision based on comfort, fit or aesthetics without much emphasis on how effective the helmet actually protects the cyclists. All helmets sold in the US require certification based on standards set by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. There are a number of proprietary safety technologies out there that are incorporated into helmets, the most well-known being MIPS (designed to minimize rotational impact forces) and WaveCell (designed to reduce linear impact). Before you make your next purchase, we recommend you check the Virginia Tech safety ratings in the link below. Virginia Tech has tested 277 helmets in the lab and has issued a comparative safety rating based on the determination of concussion risk.
