Cliff, et al,

There is no policy when someone flats or has a mechanical.  It’s more of a courtesy from one cyclist to another to stop and lend a helping hand or just keep them company.  Personal choice, I guess.  I put myself in their shoes, and how I don’t like to be stopped and continue on solo, which we all have done at some time.  So,  it becomes a ‘pay it forward’ situation.

Many times on a group ride, the mob mentality takes over and people want to stay with the group as if it’s a Grand Fondo or a road race.  I’ve had some great rides when it’s just a few people who stop and then continue on, even if we don’t catch up.  That feeling of camaraderie and knowing that we are watching each other’s back.   There have been times when the entire group has stopped and waited, but there are people who get antsy and want to move on, and that’s their choice, no judgement from me, why hold up everyone.  This may be the only time during the week to get their ‘hammer-fest’ on, or part of their training regimen, or going for that Strava segment PR.  Personally,  I view the Saturday group rides as more of an adventure, never know how things will go, what will happen, but enjoy whatever the ride brings anyway.

Sorry for the long response, and not having a definite answer.

Just a quick follow-up, Cam.  What is our 'policy' with flats?  Should we all stop?  Or pedal easy until the next regroup?  I'm not sure everyone is on the same page with how we should react when one of the riders has a flat.

Can you please suggest an appropriate course of action for all to follow?

Thanks,

Cliff

CVC RIDE PREVIEW
July 4-July 9

"Flat!" .....
We all get them, and it's part of cycling.  But, too often it happens in just the first few miles of a ride.  Many times it's because of something picked up on a previous ride that doesn't totally puncture the tube until later.  So, make sure to check your tires before the next ride.  While you're at it, grab a rag and go through some critical working parts to make sure everything is in order:  tires, rims, brake pads, chain and jockey wheels not gunked up, cable ends not frayed, shifting is smooth.  Your bike will love you for it!

Please remember when parking at The Landing for any weekend morning rides to park and congregate towards the far end of the lot away from the street and use the middle row.  Do not park next to the homes.

** This is considered a "no drop" ride.  The ride leader will keep an eye on everyone. No one is left behind.

All rides not asterisked are considered a "drop ride" so please understand the route before you start (and how to get back). If you get to a regrouping spot and no one is there, consider yourself dropped.  As always we will try to stick together & have a fun safe ride. We will regroup regularly to allow everyone a chance to ride together.

If for any reason you leave a group ride, please pass along the information to the ride leader.

It is mandatory to have & wear a helmet. It is the rider's responsibility to ensure that the helmet is in good condition (check expiration on helmet inner tag) and that your bike is in working condition as well.

That’s all for now, folks.  Have a great week!
