For this week’s safety message, I include 3 links to articles about how fluorescent clothing and bicycle lights make riders more conspicuous to drivers on the road. The WSJ article below has multiple links to peer-reviewed academic articles on bicycle visibility for those who like to get into the weeds (so to speak). I found 3 take-home messages in these articles: 1. Fluorescent clothing and bicycle lights increase visibility and reduce car vs. cyclist accidents; 2. Fluorescent leg or ankle coverings are more much more visible than bright or fluorescent jerseys; 3. Flashing tail lights are more visible to drivers than always-on taillights. These are actionable findings that reduce risk on the road. Please consider incorporating some or all of these findings into your safety regimen.
