On May 17, 2017 the Ride of Silence will traverse and unite the globe as nothing before it. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
In 2003,Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
2. Angie Simpson, City Traffic Commissioner and all around great person is encouraging anyone who has an extra bike to donate it. This is her request:: Conejo Valley High School, which is our CVUSD's continuation program, is desperately looking for adult size bikes to use by students who are walking extreme distances to school. These students also need adult helmets and bike locks. This group of students need our support to ensure they have transportation to and from school, and that they have transportation to get to and from work. If you have a bicycle, lock, or helmet to donate, you can message me (angiesimpson805@gmail.com) and I'll pick them up, or better yet drop them off at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center located at 1375 E. Janss Road. Please tag the items "For CVHS Students" and have them placed in Pete's office. We are never motivated to clean our garage, but knowing these items will help our local kids succeed is all I need to think about to make it happen.
3. The County of Ventura is currently repaving a portion of Santa Rosa Road. If anyone has any comments or concerns about the re-striping they should contact the County Public Works Department or County Supervisor Linda Parks. They are not getting rid of /or are adding back rumble strips. Please voice your concerns there if need be.
4. You are cordially invited to join the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) for a family-friendly, 10-mile recreational ride on Monday, May 15, 2017 to inaugurate the installation of the Department’s first public bicycle repair stand, a project idea of Bicycle Roundtable member and Ventura County Fire Captain Jack Nosco.
The free Bike ‘n’ Ride event will kick off at 9 a.m., departing Giant Bicycle in Newbury Park. Led by Jack Nosco, participants will travel from Newbury Park to VCFD Fire Station 33 in Lake Sherwood where friends and families can cheer participants on as riders cross the finish line!
At 10 a.m. VCFD will unveil the County’s first bike repair station. From changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs, the bike repair station features an air pump, tools and mounts to securely hang a bike so riders can make adjustments. This event will highlight the installation of one of several repair stands to be installed at Ventura County Fire Stations in our region. Giant Bicycle is located at 3587 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park. The Lake Sherwood Fire Station is located at 33 Lake Sherwood Drive.
